Study: AAT Level 2 or Level 3 Accountancy Apprenticeship
Your future in accountancy starts here!
Numbers, problem-solving and learning new skills appeal to you? Looking for a career where you can gain qualifications, earn a salary and put what you learn into practice every day?
At Wilson Howe – Chartered Accountants, we’re looking for our next AAT Accountancy Apprentice to join our growing team.
Whether you’re starting your AAT Level 2 or ready to progress to Level 3, this is your opportunity to build practical skills, gain a recognised qualification and discover where a career in accountancy could take you.
And you won’t be doing it alone. You’ll join a small, supportive team who will help you learn, build your confidence and take on new challenges as you progress.
📚 Learn it. Apply it. Build your future.
This is a hands-on apprenticeship, not a role where you spend all day watching from the sidelines!
You’ll combine practical workplace experience with structured, fully funded AAT training. You’ll learn the theory through your studies and then see how it works in real life, supporting businesses and helping our clients keep their finances in order.
You’ll gain experience in areas including:
- Bookkeeping and accounts – recording transactions, processing invoices and helping keep financial records accurate.
- VAT and tax – supporting the preparation of returns and learning how businesses meet their tax obligations.
- Reconciliations and reporting – checking figures, investigating differences and making sure everything adds up.
- Cloud accounting and technology – using modern software to process information and help us work smarter.
- Client service and administration – communicating professionally and helping keep the practice running smoothly.
You’ll start with the basics and build your knowledge, skills and responsibilities as your confidence grows.
💡 What will you be doing?
No two days need to be exactly the same. You’ll help our team with tasks such as:
- Processing receipts, payments, invoices and banking transactions.
- Maintaining accurate financial records, ledgers and spreadsheets.
- Completing bank and finance reconciliations.
- Assisting with VAT returns and tax returns.
- Supporting the preparation of monthly and annual accounts.
- Checking calculations and investigating discrepancies.
- Using accounting software, Microsoft Excel, Word and other digital systems.
- Keeping electronic client records organised and helping us maintain our paperless approach.
- Supporting client communications, general administration and the smooth running of the office.
As part of a small team, everyone plays a part. You’ll also help with everyday office tasks, such as handling telephone enquiries, welcoming visitors, managing post and preparing documents.
These tasks are a normal part of working in a small practice and will be balanced with your developing accountancy responsibilities.
🌱 Training that takes you somewhere
We want your apprenticeship to be the start of a career, not simply a qualification.
You’ll receive practical training and guidance from experienced colleagues, alongside your AAT studies. You’ll have dedicated time for your apprenticeship training during your normal working hours, in line with the requirements of your programme.
Our aim is to help you develop the technical knowledge, confidence and professional skills to progress within accountancy, with opportunities for further AAT study and potential longer-term employment with the firm.
We have a track record to be proud of: six of our seven current employees progressed from apprenticeships into permanent roles with us.
We believe in developing people from within and giving our team the opportunity to grow.
🎁 The perks of joining Wilson Howe
We know a good job is about more than the work itself. Our benefits include:
- 33 days’ holiday, including our Christmas closure.
- Flexible working and time off in lieu.
- Private medical insurance.
- Shopping and lifestyle perks.
- An employee assistance programme.
- A supportive team who want to see you succeed.
- Bailey, our office dog, who is responsible for employee wellbeing and client fuss. She takes the job very seriously!
👀 Who are we looking for?
You don’t need previous accountancy experience. We’re much more interested in your attitude, willingness to learn and potential to develop.
You’ll be well suited to this opportunity if you:
- Have a genuine interest in accountancy and want to work towards an AAT qualification.
- Have GCSE Maths and English at grades 5–9, or equivalent qualifications.
- Are comfortable working with numbers and take care over the details.
- Can communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Have basic IT skills and are willing to learn new software.
- Can organise your work, follow processes and meet deadlines.
- Enjoy working as part of a team and helping others.
- Are willing to take responsibility, ask questions and learn from feedback.
Customer-facing work experience would be useful, but it isn’t essential. Neither is previous experience in an accountancy firm.
You don’t need to know everything on day one. You need to be curious, reliable, willing to learn and ready to put the effort into developing your skills.
